KK is only second best

I'm usually not providing too much "Hand Histories" here. It's just not the style of this blog. But I have to share this with you:

I played the $25K guaranteed at Pacific yesterday and had a great night. One of the early key hands was 22 in the blinds. Don't allow the Shadow to see a cheap flop! ;-)) Flop came 2-4-A. Even with a possible street I figured that my trips are good here. I bet half the pot and was called (by one other player). Turn was another low card - I think it was the 5. Still possible straight but I doubted it. Half pot again and called again. River was an Ace for a full house. Maybe I was up against a higher full? Two aces in the pocket? Don't think so. Most probably it was an ace with a high card. So I decided "to play some poker" and checked to him. He bet - but his bet was weak and I was sure he hit trips but not the higher full. I took him all-in, he called and showed AK before he was sent to the virtual rail. Not raising before the flop cost him the tournament here...

I had another hand that was similar were I was able to see a cheap flop with K9 - flopping 99K :-))

The tournament had almost 700 players and I never was below the average stack until we reached the bubble at 70 players. It's amazing how different you can play your hands being the big stacks. And more interesting: While being short stack my play is mainly based upon the value of the cards. As big stack I threw away some hands that could be played (but not neccesarily) against other big stacks. "You never go broke if you don't go all-in against a bigger stack" - so true!

After the bubble I didn't get much to play and folded some hands after missing the flop. Due to that and the increasing blinds my M went below 10: Stacksize about 24,000 with 1,000/2,000 blinds. As I still was around average and one of the bigger stacks at this particular table I decided to play only premium hands but just raise 4BB's instead of going all-in as I woud usually do. Overall chipleader had about 100,000 at that time.
Therefore I folded A9 on the button due to a middle-position raise. Next round I woke up with KK in the small blind. Great! Some callers. Raised it to 8,000 and big blind went all-in for 24,700. Oh hell! It was folded to me and I was left with a decision either to fold or to call his all-in knowing that he had a mere 700 chips more.

With all other hands (QQ, JJ and so on) I would have folded against an all-in here. But KK? He was short-stacked like I was. He could have pulled a move with any pocket pair 99's or better. So I called and was sent to the rail by AA at 55th position (winning $87,50 instead of possible $5,500) after 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Well, looking back at it I think I should have went all-in directly. It wouldn't have changed anything here ... but it would have been the right move.
Was it correct to call here? Hard to tell - but I would say yes. How many players in the world can lay down kings here? (O.K. - it was bullets in the Phil H. clip but you get the idea). I can't and I'm even not sure if a laydown is a +EV move in the long run. Hey but Phil H. makes more $$$ than I do. So I may be wrong here ;-))

But considering this kind of move anybody should remember: "You never go broke if you don't go all-in against a bigger stack"

Gambling or game of skill?

Is poker gambling or a game of skill?

If you read this blog you most probably agree with me anyway that it's a game of skill.
But I found this nice Video from Annie Duke that you may show those who think you're a compulsive gambler:

WSOP in July

Finally our plans are made and I will be at the WSOP in July :-))

Mainly it will be a holiday trip to Florida with my girlfriend. But I will get a week in Vegas (2nd Week of July) while she visits some friends in Los Angeles (she's not into poker at all).
I got an offer from the Venetian for three free nights and I even could use them during the weekend :-))

Will I play the WSOP? We will see!
I will still try the $24+2 at FullTilt again. If I don't qualify online I will play up to two $120 satellites at the WSOP trying to get the buy-in for the $1,000 Hold'em NL (event no. 17 on July 10th). If I don't win an entry I will just enjoy the atmosphere (the HORSE event starts on July 12th) and play some regular tournaments (most probably: Paris, Aladdin, MGM).

Of course I will keep you updated while I'm there...

Table selection

I took another shot at the "Race for Bracelets" at Full Tilt to win my seat for a WSOP event. This time it was NL 6-handed. I like that - it's fast and you play lots of hands :-)

They had 272 players giving away 3 seats plus some nice cash (between 100 and 250 for the next 3 places). I managed to stay well above average into the 20 BB's comfort zone until we were down to 100 players shortly after the first break. I did get some decent hands (not so much than in the poker-tester tourney some hours before) to create a nice table image and take down some pots were I missed the flop (but still had overcards or similar). I was even able to recreate this image quite fast after a table change.

But then - after the break - our table was broke and I went to the worst table you can imagine. I was smallest stack (still with almost 20 BB's!) as I had two of the chipleaders and two more big stacks at the table. Even fifth position had more chips than me. That is tough. It made me aware how important table selection can be - if you have a choice :-(

Two key hands started the downswing: I lost with Q9 and a Q on the flop vs. the chipleader's A9 as he rivered an Ace. Luckily no all-in as we checked it down but still a big pot. Maybe I could have been more aggressive here but the flop was scary (possible straight, maybe up against two pair or something like that).
The second key hand was a KJs that I raised pre-flop. Unfortunatly the SB and the BB answered with all-in's. I was sure I was third best here so I folded. Correct decision: I would have been up against AQ and TT. Flop was KTx and the T's made a set. But the river brought a K and I would have tripled. To bad - but still happy with my decision. That's poker!

With the raising blinds and coming antes I was short stacked quite soon. Went all-in several times with A9, KK, AA, AQ and similar hands. Got no callers but collected some nice blinds, early position calls and antes.

Finally went all-in again with 88 and about 5,000 chips (blinds 360/240, ante 25) and was called by a stack of about 8,000 chips . Unfortunatly he had TT. I got no help (we both made a flush, lol) and I was out at 40th position.

So again, Vegas is stil pending but I wasn't unhappy with my play at all. As mentioned before it feels like I'm in the right track for tournaments now. Big(ger) wins will come soon. Most probably not as big as the poker-tester guy who took down $42,000 for 4th place at the Million guaranteed at PokerStars two days ago (congratulations!) but watch out for the Shadow...

Good results at limit cash games and online tournaments

Not much poker during the last days for me as I was busy with my main job.

But in between I went to Kufstein for a 5/10 limit cash game and made a nice win that night. Do I play better now after taking a break from cash games? I have now idea - maybe it's just normal standard deviation but I felt good during the game (controlling the game and myself).

I played the $15+1 ($10,000 guaranteed) at Pacific for some times now. Usually that one has an $1,000 to 2,000 overlay. Not too good results until two days ago. This felt really good. Smooth sailing in the beginning. No tough bad beats, no heartbreaking wins or losses. Just a steady increase of the bankroll. They started with 599 people with 60 getting paid. Unfortunatly with about 200 people left and having a decent stack I started to get nice playable cards (that's good) that I played as aggressive as always (that's better) but got lots of callers (that's bad) and missed the flop all the times (that's worse). So I contributed some decent amounts to pots that I had to leave early. That's the downside of an aggressive style - sometimes you will shorten your stack without ever seeing a showdown.
With about 70 players left I was severly shortstacked and had to decide to go for it or try to get into the money with less risk. I decided to take no risk and only go for it with really good cards (which I didn't get). So made it barely into the 60 and after that went all-in two times in a row with JJ and AK to double and triple up. At this blind level I still was short stacked but now had a stack that could be used as an all-in threat against several players. I finally went out 31th with a $55 win (30th place would have been $10 more) after more than 3 hours.
Maybe the result would have been better if I went aggressive at the bubble. There was a lot blind stealing at this time. But I wanted to make it into the money. It's just a psychological thing and think it was o.k. this time. Making it into the money after some tough times was far more rewarding than taking the risk (which would have been the better decision in sense of +EV).

Was I just lucky or did my tournament game improve? Again I have no idea. I felt good during the tournmament- that's all I'm sure about. I will play this tournament more often in the future and see if my results in that kind of tournament will improve significantly.
I'm sure my live tornament game is much better since Tunica ... if I now get the same improvement with the online game, that would be great.
